Tag der Forts / Fortress Day

Liebe Teilnehmerinnen, liebe Teilnehmer am 23. Tag der Forts, liebe Partner in Deutschland und Europa,

nach über zwei Dekaden Festungsveranstaltung könnte man meinen, dass nahezu alles in der Vergangenheit schon gesagt, lückenlos unser Erbe in Stein und Beton gezeigt wurde.

Doch weit gefehlt. Unsere Europäische Denkmalinitiative zieht immer noch weite Kreise beim Publikum, lockt neue Besucher in die alten Gemäuer und motiviert weitere Festungsstädte, sich dem „Tag der Forts“ anzuschließen.

Und da die Zeit unermüdlich fortschreitet, so können wir in diesem Jahr in Köln 150 Jahre „Zwischenwerk VIIIb“ feiern. Und das geschieht sichtbar mit einem neuen „Außengewandt“, da die baufällige Kaponniere dank aufwändiger Sanierungsmaßnahmen der Stadt Köln im Rohbauglanz erstrahlt, kurz vor ihrer Fertigstellung steht.

Ebenso ist für mich immer wieder neu die Begeisterung der Menschen, die uns Jahr für Jahr ganz besonders am „Tag der Forts“ aber auch über das Jahr verteilt besuchen und die dafür Sorge tragen, dass der Denkmalschutz als wichtiges Element in unserer lernenden Gesellschaft an Image gewinnt. Auch wächst das Interesse von Firmen, Institutionen und Organisationen, Festungswerke mit ihrem geschichtlichen und musealen Gehalt in ihr Handeln zu integrieren. Nicht selten geben dann Vorträge und Führungen Impulse für das Engagement weiterer Akteure für den Erhalt denkmalgeschützter Festungswerke.

Und last but not least gilt es für mich, unser verbindendes Element ehrenamtlicher Arbeit und bürgerschaftlichen Engagements in den Blick zu nehmen. Unzählige Stunden der Vorbereitung neben Beruf und Familie flossen nicht nur in Köln, sondern auch bei unseren Partnern in Deutschland und im europäischen Ausland in die Präsentation der Objekte, die Kuration der Ausstellungen und in die digitale Präsenz von der Website bis hin zur Social Media-Kommunikation. Ich bin daher allen Helferinnen und Helfern sehr dankbar, dass wir Ihnen als Gäste wieder einen umfassenden Einblick in unsere gemeinsame Festungsgeschichte geben können.

Dear participants in the 23rd Fortification Day, dear partners in Germany and Europe,

After more than two decades of fortress events, one might think that almost everything has already been said and that our heritage has been fully showcased in stone and concrete.

But nothing could be further from the truth. Our European Monument Initiative continues to resonate widely with the public, drawing new visitors to the ancient walls and encouraging other fortress towns to join ‘Fortification Day’.

And as time marches on relentlessly, this year in Cologne we are able to celebrate the 150th anniversary of ‘Zwischenwerk VIII b’. This is clearly evident in its new ‘exterior’, as the dilapidated caponier, thanks to extensive renovation work carried out by the City of Cologne, now shines in all its structural splendour and is nearing completion.

I am also constantly struck by the enthusiasm of the people who visit us year after year – particularly on Fortification Day but also throughout the rest of the year – and who ensure that heritage conservation gains a better reputation as a vital element in our learning society. There is also growing interest among companies, institutions and organisations in integrating fortifications, with their historical and museum value, into their activities. It is not uncommon for talks and guided tours to inspire further stakeholders to get involved in the preservation of listed fortifications.

And last but not least, I believe it is important to focus on the common thread that links voluntary work and civic engagement. Countless hours of preparation, alongside work and family commitments, were invested not only in Cologne but also by our partners in Germany and across Europe in the presentation of the artefacts, the curation of the exhibitions and our digital presence, from the website to social media communications. I am therefore very grateful to all the volunteers, as it is thanks to them that we can once again offer you, our guests, a comprehensive insight into our shared fortification history.
